The SEO handbook I wish someone had handed me
How Do I Do SEO does one thing: explain, in plain English, how a small-business owner actually ranks on Google — what you can do yourself this weekend, and what is worth paying for. No jargon, no course to buy, no gatekeeping.
Run the free scorecardWhy this exists
I build and rank websites for small and home-service businesses for a living, and the same question comes up every week: “How do I do SEO myself?” Most of the answers online are either a wall of jargon written for other marketers, or a pitch dressed up as advice. This site is neither. It is the honest order of operations — what actually moves the needle for a small local business, in plain language, in the sequence I would do it. Some of it you can absolutely do yourself on a Saturday. Some of it is worth paying for. I will tell you which is which, because the fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend everything is easy or everything needs an agency. Do the free stuff first. If you get to the part where you would rather run your business than learn keyword research, that is what we are here for.

What this site stands for
Do the free stuff first
The highest-return SEO moves for a small business — claiming your Google Business Profile, asking for reviews, writing clear service pages — cost nothing but an afternoon. This site puts them first because they work, and because doing them teaches you what good looks like.
Honest about what to hand off
Some SEO quietly eats every spare hour you have. When we hit that line, we say so plainly instead of pretending everything is a five-minute DIY job — or that everything needs an agency.
No guaranteed rankings, ever
Google itself treats a guaranteed-#1 promise as a scam signal. You will never read one here. Real SEO is a range and a discipline, not a position anyone can honestly promise.
Plain English, no jargon wall
Every acronym gets translated and every step is written for the person running the business, not for other marketers. If a guide reads like it needs a glossary, it has failed its job.
Rather have someone do it for you?
Tell us your business and your town. We’ll send back the exact searches we’d go after and why — no “guaranteed #1” nonsense, because that’s the scam we help you rank against.
